Lesson 3 : The 4 magic chords

Now that you know how to hold properly your instrument, it's time to learn your first chords! Here we will see the 4 magic guitar chords, which will allow you to play hundreds of songs.

  • For each chord I will show you a guitar tab. It must be read as follows:
  • The left string represents the thickest, the lowest string
  • The right string represents the thinnest, sharpest string
  • The squares represent the frets of your guitar
  • The circles represent your fingers:
    • 1 = Index Finger
    • 2 = Middle Finger
    • 3 = Ring Finger
    • 4 = Pinky finger

E Minor chord

C Major chord

G Major chord

D Major Chord
Now guys you know how to place your fingers on your guitar neck to play those chords, and it's a really good thing ! But the most difficult part is to change chords smoothly and fast enough to keep up with the tempo. Here are my tips for doing it effectively:

  • Make the smallest possible finger movement. This is the Golden Rule, you will go from one chord to another faster if you do not lift all your fingers between each chord.
  • Identify if there is a pivot finger. The pivot fingers will be your best friends to make chord changes smooth. For example, you notice that between the E (if you play with Index and Middle Finger) and the C, the Index finger can be used as pivot fingers so that you don't have to replace all your fingers. Use them as much as possible, they are really great assets.
  • Preview your next chord. When you play a chord, already start to mentally visualize the next one. It’s going to help you a lot to smoothly switch between chords.
  • Work hard again and again! There is no secret, we improve ourselves by repeating again and again. I will never forget this joy, the first time I managed to line up 4 chords properly to play Zombie (The Cranberries). So don't give up and you will definitely reach your objectives.
Good luck and may the force be with you !
