Lesson 5 : Your first riff

I know that when you start the guitar, it can be very frustrating to play something that does not sound very fluid and musical. That’s why I will teach you guys how to play the first riff I have personally learned. Surely one of the most FAMOUS and SIMPLE riff of the rock world : Smoke on the water by Deep Purple.

Everything will take place on the E (High) string, the thickest string. You will play the following frets on this string :

0 - 3 - 5
0 - 3 - 6 - 5
0 - 3 - 5 - 3 - 0

I advise you to play fret 3 with your index finger, fret 5 with your ring finger and fret 6 either with your little finger if you succeed or by shifting your ring finger. The 0 represents the empty string, so you don't need a finger.

It is important to put your finger as low as possible on the fret in order to make the best sound. This rule is also true when you play regular chords.

Now you just have to practice listening to the original to soak up the rhythm. I advise you to go slowly at first to get used to the movement and gradually increase the pace.
